چکیده

In a previous paper (1), i t was shown tha t strains of pneumococci producing a capsule of soluble polysaccharide (C~) 1 related chemically and immunologically to the C or cell-wall polysaccharide of pneumococcus arise b y spontaneous muta t ion and can be isolated readily from several noncapsulated var iants of this organism. Vaccines of the Cs mutan t s are highly antigenic in rabbits , giving rise to antisera of high t i ter which serve as useful tools for the s tudy of the propert ies not only of the Cs capsular polysaccharides, bu t also of the closely related C polysaccharides.

Identification of EDTA-Soluble Polysaccharides from Pea Epicotyl Cell Walls and Their Interaction with Xyloglucan

Nascent pectin and glucuronoxylan were prepared from membrane-bound enzymes obtained from pea epicotyls. They had previously been shown to exhibit a proteinand pH-dependent pattern of binding to cell wall ghosts and to xyloglucan extracted from cell walls prepared from pea epicotyls; maximum binding required a pH of 3-4, and the presence of cell wall proteins, namely assemblins. To determine wh...

Cell Wall Metabolism in Ripening Fruit (VI. Effect of the Antisense Polygalacturonase Gene on Cell Wall Changes Accompanying Ripening in Transgenic Tomatoes).

Cell walls of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) fruit, prepared so as to minimize residual hydrolytic activity and autolysis, exhibit increasing solubilization of pectins as ripening proceeds, and this process is not evident in fruit from transgenic plants with the antisense gene for polygalacturonase (PG). A comparison of activities of a number of possible cell wall hydrolases indicated t...

Teichoic acid is the major polysaccharide present in the Listeria monocytogenes biofilm matrix.

The aim of this study was to characterize the Listeria monocytogenes biofilm and particularly the nature of the carbohydrates in the biofilm extracellular matrix and culture supernatant versus to cell wall carbohydrates. Listeria monocytogenes serotype 1/2a and 4b strains were able to form complex biofilms embedded in an extracellular matrix. The soluble carbohydrates from biofilm extracellular...

Chemical and structural similarities in wall polysaccharides of some Penicillium, Eupenicillium and Aspergillus species.

Various fractions were extracted from cell-wall material of Eupenicillium crustaceum, Penicillium brevi-compactum, P. decumbens, Aspergillus flavipes and A. ochraceus. The most characteristic fractions, which may have chemotaxonomic relevance, were F1I, an alpha-(1-3) glucan (alkalisoluble, water-insoluble), which amounted to 16.2-32.5% of the cell-wall material, and F1S (alkali and water-solub...

Acid-Soluble Nucleotides of Penicillin-Induced Protoplasts of Escherichia Coli **

The bactericidal action of penicillin is presently believed to result from alterations in nucleotide and peptide metabolism related to the structure of bacterial cell wall material. Park and Strominger have shown that in the penicillin-sensitive staphylococcus the drug causes the rapid accumulation of a group of uridine nucleotides."' These compounds contain a hexosamine, acetylmuramic acid, an...
